Play in steering box

Hi all, this week I've been mainly thinking about steering !! Disco '93 TDi200

I've got play in my steering box (steady there!!) and I'm wondering if there is any way I can adjust/shim it out.

I seem to remember that there is an adjustment screw on the 4-bolt steering box - anyone got any ideas/experience of this??

Cheers all

Dave

Re: Play in steering box

You Loosen a bolt of the top of the steering box, then rotate the hex bolt below to remove the play in the box.

Re: Play in steering box

Hi Dave

Before you start on the steering box, just make absolutely sure that all the ball-joints are in A1 condition, particularly the one on the end of the steering box drop-arm. Same problem on my Defender was cured by changing the drop-arm ball joint.
If you do adjust the steering box, make sure you do so in tiny increments with a lock-to-lock test after each adjustment. If the 'box has got some wear in it (usually around the dead-ahead position) and you overtighten the adjusting screw, the box itself can tighten up as put lock on, with some quite scary results....!

Mike.
