300 90 brake problem

Here is a brief description of the problem I'm having with my 300 90 (solid discs all round)...
Brake Problem – 1997 Defender 90 300 Tdi

• Brake pedal is soft at random intervals – pumping pedal sometimes firms it up, sometimes doesn’t make any difference at all. Pedal doesn’t go to floor but continued pressure with vehicle stopped pushes pedal further and further.
• Brake pedal is firm at random intervals and vehicle stops but stopping distance is extended. Brake performance seems better when pedal is softer (ie stopping distance is ‘normal’) even though pedal travel is excessive.
• No air in braking system – brakes bled numerous times in the ‘correct’ order – ie start furthest away from the master cylinder. Fluid is clean and clear, both in the reservoir and when released from the bleed nipples when bleeding.
• No visible leaks – no puddles on drive, no signs of leakage on callipers, brake lines, master cylinder etc. No loss of brake fluid from reservoir.
• Callipers, discs, pads and fluid all renewed (approximately 6,000 miles ago) – not because of this problem. One rear calliper was totally seized, the other was partially seized. Vehicle is 11 years old with 110,000 miles on the clock so brake renewal seemed a sensible investment as I intend to keep it for as long as it runs and as long as I am able to drive it! Also fitted stainless steel braided hoses front and rear.
• Problem is getting gradually worse.
• Rattling brake pads – seems as if the pads are coming off too far when brake pedal is released. Front brakes definitely rattling, difficult to ascertain whether or not the rear brakes are doing the same when driving the vehicle.
• Vehicle stops in a straight line at all times, no pulling to either side.
• No locking of wheels, unless I really, really stand on the pedal.
• Tested to see if effect is the same whilst reversing. It is.
• Pads are unglazed with at least 10mm of material left on them. Wear is even across each axle, fronts are marginally more worn than rears. All discs are polished on both faces so all four sets of brake pads are being used.

If anybody can make any sense of that lot, and can offer any advice, I would be very grateful indeed.

Cheers and thank you !

Mike.

Re: 300 90 brake problem

The hard pedal is prob the vacum pump or the servo my experence is mostly vacum pump but check valve on servo and servo pipe.
If you still had normal brake hoses fitted i would say clamp the hoses ne by one and check to see if the brake pedal feels better each time and if so rebleed the brakes. Also check for excessive wheel bearing play as this can push the pad back.

Dont laughf when i say this for i have seen it done the calipers are fitted with the bleed screws at the top ie lh caliper on lhs
