Heres one to make you think.

I have an 89 110 CSW with the 2.5 td engine (19j)
This problem started a few days ago. the engine started then stopped it eventually restarted and it sounded like a fuel problem.
The problem since then is that there is a putt putt noise comming from the engine and during the firing a get like a hesitation and a puff of smoke at the exaust (just slight) so i fired redex treatment through it and have been running about for a few days. No difference so i removed the rocker cover tonight and reset the valve clearances (Haven't done that since i put the engine in 2 1/2 years ago) They were only very slightly out. So to get a better idea what was going on i started the engine up . When the puff of smoke comes out the exaust it also comes out of the side of the push rod. The second one from the fan. Thats where the putt putt noise is comming from and it is exaust fumes/gas. A mate suggested the cylinder head gasket might be blown. But i have no overheating no water in the oil or on top of the oil cap. So does any one know what's going on how do i have exaust gases comming from the side of a push rod ?? im stumpped Any and all help greatfull apreciated. Cheers

Re: Heres one to make you think.

yOUR mate is correct it is the head gasket,It has blown across the block from the cyl to the push rod missing the water jacket on the way hence no over heating as the pressure is not going into the cooling system.

Re: Heres one to make you think.

took the head of today and the gasket was well gone between the cylinder and the pushrod hole. Checked the head and it seems fine. So fired it back on. It was a bit hesitant at first and then ran fine, Took it for a test drive and everything seemed fine. No water in the oil no overheating and best of all the noise is gone.

The only thing if found wrong was tht the hotspot was lose do you think it was this that wrecked the gasket ?

Re: Heres one to make you think.

well everthing went ok for a few days and suddenly i lost power. After a poke about i discoverd that one of the valves on cylinder no 3 is not moving. Also there is a funny noise when i try to start it as if the bottom of the engine is spinning and then the rest joins in and i get the normal noise. Me thinks that the timing belt has slipped and ****ed the valve. Someone suggested the camshaft but the valves on cylinder 4 are working fine. Will the engine still run if the timing is out ?? It does not start that easy. Someone else suggested that the tappet roller might be ****ed. Is this possible. When the engine runs there are no rattles,Banging knocking or anything else. My final question is the book says to use a dial torque wrench to tension the belt. Can you tension the belt the same way as you would do a normal car. Or does any one know where i can buy a dial torque wrench ??

Re: Heres one to make you think.

Andy is this a 200tdi or old style 2.5td?
If the timming belt brakes they usaly just brake the rocker arms or bend the push rods.If they are ok is there a side plate on the drivers side of the engine to take of to inspect the the camshaft follower ?

Re: Heres one to make you think.

it's the old style 2.5td. Stripped the head off and found the problems. 3 tappet sliders are badly cracked and distorted and the top of an other one is split in two which had jammed the pushrod between the slider and the block. Got them out just waiting for the parts to arrive. Ordered them on tuesday and im still waiting. No mud for this landrover owner this weekend boo hoo.

Re: Heres one to make you think.

well it's fixed. after replacing the tappet sliders etc. i had an absolute nightmare getting the crank pulley bolt off. But after a lot of bad words and a bit of advice i used a breaker bar jamed against the chassis and let the starter do the work. The crank pulley was out by one tooth and the timming belt looked ok,But it would be silly not to replace it. Found the tensioner very noisey and rough when rotated so that was changed to. Once it was all put back together i couldnt get the bugger started. well i had lay outside in the cold for about 5 weeks. After i flattend two batteries and tried to fry the jump lead i tried filling the cooling system with boiling water out of the kettle and left it for 10 mins and to my joy the bugger started after about 10 seconds with a big puff of smoke. Now it looks like the starter has given up the ghost ah well landrovers for you lol
