GEAR BOX - Series 111 (1982 diesel)

Hi My Gear box has been giving me a lot of trouble.
Jumping gears - 2nd,3rd,& top.

I intend shopping around for a second hand unit.

Are series 3 boxes similar for petrol and diesel versions?

Is the series 2A similar to the series 3?

My LRO has a 5 bearing 2.25 diesel engine.

Any info will be most helpful.

what options do I have.

Can I upgrade with a defender box ?? can a series 3 transfer box fit a defender box??

Will a leyland Sherpa box mate to the series 3 transfer box.

I am writing from Sri Lanka.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers
Nilhan

Re: GEAR BOX - Series 111 (1982 diesel)

yes
no crap gearbox dont fit one
defender gearbox completely diffrent
dont think sherpa one will fit plus ratios diffrent,14 inch wheels and 16 inch wheels

Nilhan have you checked the end of the gear stick for wear i think it should have a plastic cup on the end of the shaft and if this was missing the selector would not engauge properly makeing it jump out of gear.

Befor you have so many gears jumping out it sounds like a loose main or lay shaft in the box which might fix

Re: GEAR BOX - Series 111 (1982 diesel)

Thanks Alex,

Yes I think you are correct about the loose shafts there is too much play.
I have to do some real hunting for a Series 3 box.

So far I have been able to find only series 2A boxes.

If I cant find a good S3 box I will probably have to rebuild my S3 box. To explore this option please help me with the following questions ---

1) Is the Series 3 gear box housing similar to the 2A housing?

2) Will the series 3 bell housing fit a series 2A housing?

3) Are the series 2A and 3 transfer boxes similar.

Regards

Nilhan
