Oil coming up dipstick

I have just purchased a 2.5 non Turbo diesel 90 (1987). It smokes - white smoke - on start up, as I believe many landrovers do. It uses no oil and once it is running smoke clears, apart from some smoke when pulling away from traffic. I have been told that this could mean that the piston rings need changing - is this likely to be correct? With my limited experience, I would have thought this would have meant it used quite a lot of oil and had some blue smoke.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Mike

Re: Oil coming up dipstick

Hi Nick

I was always under the impression that white smoke was a sign of water getting into the cylinders, as you said oil smoke generally shows up blue.
Does the 90 use much water ?

Re: Oil coming up dipstick

Hi Mike

Thanks for the reply, no my 90 does not use any water. I have now been told that it could be the crank case breather. However I can not find this on my 2.5 non turbo engiene. Does it only have a breather on the filler cap?

Re: Oil coming up dipstick

it also has the breather pipe comming of of the rocker cover at the rear right hand side looking from the front which goes down the back. Worn piston rings would give you blue smoke. These old engine give of some white or quiet a bit when started from cold as the glow plugs do not stay on to heat the diesel when started like modern diesel engine but this should clear after a min or 2 when left to tick over. some smoke on hard excleration is normal with these old engine. If oil is comming up the dipstick then you have to much Back pressure. Now this could be cause by a cracked piston, worn piston ring or the head gasket could be blown. When the head gasket started to go on mine the 2.5TD i had an increase in pressure before it went right, the gasket was burst between no 1 cylinder and the push rod. So i was getting exaust gas etc entering the engine from here. If you are going to change the rings on an engine that age i recon that you might have a cracked piston or 2 so i would buy the piston and rings together. I know mine has to cracked pistons. So in the summer im going to replace them all. Before you go that far you will need to check what size the pistons are and what the bores are like. Get the cylinder head skimmed at the same time It took me about 3 hours start to finnish to change the head gasket on mine. If you change the head gasket that eliminates that problem as you dont have to get water in the oil or over heat for the gasket to fail. Hope this helps a bit
