Snaking Under Braking

Morning All

It would seem that the rear brakes on my 300 90 are doing a bit more work than they should, heavy braking causes a bit of 'snaking' as if the rears are locking up (they don't but they must be close). All the tyres are spot-on, as are springs and dampers (OME all round), steering ball-joints / bushes etc are OK.
Is there some sort of balancing valve in the braking system that distributes brake force front/rear ? If so can it be adjusted or changed ?

Any help / hionts gratefully received.

Cheers

Mike.

Re: Snaking Under Braking

Hi Mike
I had a similar problem with my old 200tdi 90 a couple of years back. There is no brake balancer fitted to the system to distribute the breaking pressure from front to rear. well there wasnt on my 200tdi & i think the 300tdi system is pretty much the same? It turned out to be a sticking caliper piston that resulted in 1 side working harder than the other, it was only evident under high speed breaking or heavy breaking, normal gentle town driving didnt really have any noticeable snaking effect. The best thing to do is to run the truck down to your local MOT station & get them to put it on the break test machine, That should show up any differences from side to side. Even things like worn discs can have a similar effect to what your having. I ended up changing Rear discs, pads & calipers & once they had bedded in all was fine.

Re: Snaking Under Braking

Hi Nick

Think I'll take your advice and get the brakes checked out at an MoT centre. That said, I have replaced calipers / discs / pads on the rear already and there's been no improvement....

Cheers

Mike.
