Fuel problem??

I have a Series IIA (2 1/4 petrol) and the engine is a replacement from I think 1984. I have lately had a lot of trouble with apparent misfiring, and every time I think a cure has been achieved it starts again. All the obvious things have been done: plugs, points, condenser etc. As fuel starvation was suspected the tank was drained and flushed and part of the fuel line (pump to carb) was replaced.

All was OK for a week or so and then the problem re-appeared. It is quite inconsistent; sometimes it is there from the start and goes after a few miles. Sometimes it comes once the engine has warmed up.

Has anybody got any ideas about what to try next?

Re: Fuel problem??

Hello Carole
You may have water in the carb float chamber,do you have a in line petrol filter fitted? Ithink there is also diaghram on these carbs that can cause problems?
If you can get your hands on a haynes manual it has some good pics in it

or
poor insulation on the plug leads, bad coil/connections or to much/little battery volts going to coil positive connection

Re: Fuel problem??

Thanks Alex. The carb is OK, it was replaced with a Weber a few years ago; that's been checked and jets cleaned etc. I'm wondering if there should be some sort of filter on the end of the pipe where it leaves the tank.

Just a thought, but with recent fuel shortages I imagine the levels must have got quite low in the tanks at the petrol stations, and maybe some gunge from the bottom got sucked into the pumps.... My most recent spate of trouble came just after a fill-up.

Re: Fuel problem??

I have a 1983 110 2 1/4 petrol & had terrible problems like fuel starvation & backfire.
I re-con carb, fitted new glass bowl filter, replaced mechanical pump, checked petrol lifting up to carb (just watched it squirt out) like you all ignition & all now works. A garage suggested evaporation & fitted anti evap device but this was a disaster so I threw it out. Now goes well. I reckon certainly down to fuel.
