110 Oil leak from?

Hi,
I have 1983 110 petrol 2.25
I have just noticed an oil leak coming from the Bell housing, it runs out of the empty threaded hole at the bottom (I guess this is where you can put in a plug) the oil is contaminated with water, looks milky, as our club had a week end at Billing off road course. When stopped & parked up leak seems to stop. Can any one tell me where is it coming from? is it serious? which bits do I replace? any other help really appreciated. All else works fine. Please feel free to email direct. rlowery@onetel.com

Re: 110 Oil leak from?

hi bob, sounds like your leak is coming from the input shaft on the gear box, the only other place is the seal at the back of the engine on the crank, as your oil is contaminated and milky id expect it to be the gearbox, have you done much wading? i dont no alot about your landy specificaly but to do my series 2 i took the whole gear box out and replaced a gasket in the bell housing,

Re: 110 Oil leak from?

Thanks Jamie for taking time to reply. I put vehicle on level ground & checked both gearbox & transfer box oil levels....ok then colour...ok so presume those to be alright I feared gearbox as its most complicated & expensive I have already replaced it via Ashcroft only about 2 years (4000 miles ago)
So that leaves engine. Only seems to leak after longish motorway run local runs don't seem to set it off. Is replacing seal difficult?
Thanks again Bob.

Re: 110 Oil leak from?

mmm not sure, iv never done that one. it would meen spliting the gearbox from the engine, then removing the clutch and fly wheel but i dont know after that, so is your engine oil that coulor then? or do yo think its getting contaminated on the way out somewhere?

Re: 110 Oil leak from?

Hi, The water contamination was from wading at Billing as I had not put a plug in the bell housing I now have a plug & will use it when going into water. So the oil with water contamination must have been the water washing around the housing now its just oil not milky. I reckon it must be the oil seal it may have to waite untill next year I might try an additive see if that stops leak for now.
Thanks.
