Did Sam's even have a place to sit? I only remeber getting a pizza to go for a buck, stealing some beer, and then devouring it all in Goody's parking lot. I have no memory of Char Burger whatsoever. Maybe it was too much beer from Sam's. Where was it? I still go to a Cassano's whenever I am in Dayton. Really pathetic pizza, but full of good memories. |

Yo, "Cobra", Party of one? Table for maybe two? Sam's Pizzaria had a couple of really small tables in the rear of the shop. You didn't think Sam Donesi would want to miss a buck? As for Cassano's Pizza. Vic Sr. would roll over in his grave if he knew how badly Jr. putzed up the business. Great old Dayton name. Lousy old Dayton pizza. Do you remember Marion's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor on Main and Hudson Avenues? Marion Glass was the owner until he sold out to his trusty manager sometime in '64 or '65. He didn't think much of Cassano's pizza either. He started Marion's Pizza Parlors. The company now has around twenty pizza restaurants in the Dayton area. Marion , unfortunately has made that big delivery in the sky. To bad, he was a really nice guy. A really good pizza [ voted #1 in Dayton], cold draft beer, and plenty of seating. Sorry- no buck pizza or dashing with a 48 cent quart. Marion's pizza has managed to knock the socks off Cassano's and other pizzarias for some time now. The Char Burger was on Salem Avenue, right side, just past Kleppinger Road. The great new "Galaxie Night Club" and eatery was on that corner. Remember that place? It lasted about a year or so. I think the Char Burger had the best tasting burgers around. Lots of smoky grill taste. Most likely enhanced from a bottle of smoke flavor. However, the onion rings were to die for. Realy tasty, and plenty of them. I wish they were still around. To many fancy " burger joints" now days. I just can't accept the thought of bean sprouts on my sandwich. Now a little ditty for Don. What the h#** is your fixation with Salem Avenue. I reaize you only lived a block from the street, but loyalty only goes so far.You omitted lots of good places to go in our "youte". {just quoting Cobra.] I am compiling a list of eateries that were around during our high school years. I will post listings and comments soon. That should clog up the old Forum for a while. If I get creative enough, it might even be interesting. |

Harry: Thanks for the history lesson of sorts. I remember Marions on Main and Hudson. I think I mentioned them once in one of my posts. I remember they had a "frosty" of some type which is much like the "frosty" that Wendy's sells today. I did not know that Marion's on Hudson and Main was the guy who started Marion's Pizza. Thanks for that update. Here in Detroit there is a new pizza place called "Tomatos A'Pizza." They make what people often refer to as New York pizza. They also make a "white" pizza...no tomato sauce but they use tomatoes instead. A white pizza is great!! Take care |

Personally, I am amazed to find that anyone ever ate anywhere but at Goody's. All I remeber is hanging out there all night, nursing a coke (or maybe a burger if I had just been paid)for hours and hoping Howard wouldn't kick me out. Sooner or later, everyone would show up there. Then we would head out to sneak into the drive in or meet the few guys who were lucky enough to have dates for a debriefing and to shoot pool all night at Wink's in Forest Park Plaza. If we got there after midnight, we would usually find "Pop" Wink sleeping on a tarp thrown on top of one of the tables. The truly amazing part, was, the balls were still on the table under the tarp. As I remember, he had a truly "hot" daughter-in-law, who was one of the real attractions of the place.

I was "googling" and found this GREAT stroll down memory lane. If you can stand hearing from an OLD FART, whose age has passed his class year ('61), I'd have to vote for Goody's HANDS DOWN...I mean REALLY NOW...those wonderful cheeseburgers w/special sauce (WAYYYYYY before the 1st McDonalds opened up on Free Pike!)...the shoe-string french-fries with GRAVY and a ROOTBEER FREEZE! What's NOT TO LIKE!?!? Finish it off with an EASYWAY for dessert! Watch out for Howard, though, if you tried to sneak out without paying by climbing out the men's room window! (NEVER DID THAT-just as I NEVER got into a (Salem OR Dixie)drive-in hidden in a trunk of a friend's (Wayne Locker-band drummer) car-'53 Mercury!) Or the rent-a-cop (a.k.a. BROWNIE)who patrolled the parking lot and wasw always trying to intimidate EVERYONE! Of course, if you had a friend with a car, such as Dick Bodey's (RIP)'52 yellow and white Olds, you could skip out at lunch and drive the short distance to HUSSMAN's drugstore and sit at the counter in the back and have several of his FIFTEEN CENT cheeseburgers and a FREEZING COLD mug (fresh from the ice-cream freezer) of rootbeer. YUM! Some days, it paid to take a circuitous route home, and stop at the drug-store on Delaware & Richmond for a "PHOSPHATE"...NECTAR if you had any refined sense of taste. Char-Burger was a close second, but when your schoolmate (Nancy & Suzie Kopelove) dad owned it, you HAD to toss them a little business every now and then. Sherer's Ice Cream shop on N. Main was also a treat. Across from Frankie's Forest Park AMUSEMENT PARK! The mall was later. King Cole or, heaven forfend, the MAISSONETTE in Cincy, was always for SPECIAL occasions-parents' anniversaries, Mother's Day, etc. Sam's pizza WAS THE BEST; Cassano's farther out Salem Ave., a close second. Just my himble opinion. BTW, where is Betsy Hershberger, Cindy Morgan & Debbie Dryden? GOLDEN MEMORIES to all... Dr. Roger Harris |

Afterthoughts: Frank's Tasty-Bird rotisserie chicken take-out Verner's ginger ale Anticcoli's - on Salem Ave. - GREAT GARLIC BREATH after pasta and especially their house salad!! Rinaldo's bekery on Fairview Ave. (STILL THERE!) Suttmiller's on lower N. Main St. Trebein Inn Peerlesss Mill Inn in Miamisburg Golden Lamb Inn in Lebanon Sandra Rudin's dad's TROPICS on N. Main St & Delaware- great for late date dining, especially RUMAKI! Not places to eat, but still memorable: The DIAMOND CLUB-Stanley & Webster Meeker's Party hut(Quonset hut) on King's Hwy candy store on the corner of Fairview & Rugby? a few blocks up from Brown elem. think of Birdseye pies and Necco wafers & MILK DUDS which could suck the fillings out of your teeth! More strolling: Coach Eby snapping his Achilles tendon playing handball at the "Y", and GYM AIDS running his gym classes- John Weaver, PHIL Stockstill & me for one early am class. Oren Fisher breaking his leg sledding down SUICIDE HILL at the Hills & Dales golf course, and me taking his place as the strong man in "Carousel"- padded costume for extra muscles - fortunately NO lines to speak! Students from several classes ditching to the Kopelove's house w/Nancy or Suzie. The NEW auditoreum! Cutting study hall on a pass from Mr. Bradrick or MAGNIFICENT BING DAVIS. Stealing ice cream from the Grace Methodist kitchen freezer-possible w/help from John Weaver and his pastoral/parental connections. Christmas light displays on Yale Avenue Delivering Journal Heralds w/Phil Stockstill at 5:30 a.m. Splitting time between MYF & TYG Bus-ride to Welcome Stadium. Getting dad's car ('60 t-bird convert.) stuck in the snow, after "making out" at DeWeese Pkwy. Learning to "TWIST" from several Little Colonels. Turning the guys shower into a shallow swimming pool with plugged drain & trash cans and wet towels. Soft pretzel sales in the front hallway. |

Curtain Call for "Marion" and all his Pizza Fans I just shook hands yesterday with the spry ‘one and only’ Marion Glass, founder and owner of Marion’s Pizza. He had his drivers license taken away, and now uses a walker, as his driver helps him out of his Caddy. He had just been to the barber shop and looked pretty sharp at age 88. He was at the (name withheld) bank giving them h#ll for ‘not even sending an I’m sorry letter’ after he was robbed at their night deposit window last year. (The robbery did not cause him to require a walker). So until his son Roger takes over entirely, the 'Marion’s reputation' will remain safe, as Marion still 'drops in' on his stores at random, to count the pepperonis!

Hi guys!! How long did you think you'd go before I got back in the action? It is nice to read Roger Harri's comments. I remember Roger..in the band...later OSU dental school..friend of Bob Klein, etc. Roger's recollection of places, names and such did bring back memories beyond what has already been menitoned. I remember when Jim Eby hurt himself playing handball. I never hurt myself playing handball, however. Sam's Pizza did have tables in the back as Harry Malone recalled....but the place was primarily a take out pizza place. To Harry, thanks for the history lesson regarding Marion's on Hudson and Main. I recall they served a "Frosty" or something like that which was like a chocolate milk shake. I appreciated learning that Marion's Pizza was derived from the same family that owned the Marion's on Hudson and Main. Roger Harris's recollection of the drug store at Delaware and Richmond was great. How about Brawley's Drug Store on Salem and their flavored phosphate drinks. I liked the nectar phosphate at Brawley's. To me, there was nothing quite as good as a fountain coke assuming the mixture was done correctly. Roger Harris' recollection of the snack foods was also "right on the money." I remember Susan, Nancy and Ruthlyn Kopelove as well. Sadly, Nancy is deceased and I don't know where Susan or Ruthlyn are living. The Kopeloves lived across the street on Marathon. The Hershbergers lived up the street on Brookside Drive. Such times! |
