Unscrambling Dayton's Bands and Bars in the 60's
I just read Sam Kurtz's article on " rembering Huncie". It's always nice to read a tribute to a person who has passed on and left their memory instilled in the minds of others. Good note Sam. I don't belive you suffer from CRS disease. Possibly to many visits to "nickle night" at the Diamond Club.Huncie was indeed 62 years of age. Class of '61 Roosevelt H. S.in Dayton. "Huncie and the Entertainers", I believe, was formed in 1960. A lot of good young talent in the band. It was his only band for years. "H Bomb" Ferguson did indeed perform at the Rendesvous Club on Salem Avenue. What a fire trap. Fort McKinley's true "Road House" bar. "Big J.Bush and the Houserockers" was the house band at the Diamond Club on the corner of Troy and Stanley Streets. They also had "Wayne Cochran and his C C Riders band", a big group out of Macon Georgia in the '60's, at least once a month. What a show they put on. I think we had to pay a $1.00 cover to get in for their show. The Diamond Club was owned by Jenny Pringle and her son. She was a retired Ladies Professional Golfer from Dayton. Straight from the greens to making green. What a business to get into after the serenity of golf. When business got a little slow during the week she started "nickle night". The band always played four nights a week and Wednesday was the weakest. "Nickle Night" ran on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 pm. The band started at nine. Draft beer was the special promo. 5 cents was the price. It got everone tuned up for the band. For a dollar or so you could get pretty tuned up yourself. Those were good times. You mentioned a craving for a Goody's hamburger. I wouldn't mind having one of their burgers again myself. Maybe a 48 cent quart from Sam's Pizza? Better yet maybe we could get Stockstill to boost it for us.
