OFA Cardiac Exam Question

I've been researching the whole SAS tests and looking at statistics. On the OFA website, some of the results from the cardiac say either "normal-cardiologist" or "normal-practioner"....Does this mean that a family vet can perform the tests for the cardiac exam and I don't need to see a cardiologist? Camie, how do you do your SAS testing?

Re: OFA Cardiac Exam Question

Normal practioner. You have to find a vet who is certified to do it. Dr.William Street(New Market Vet) does it here. If you can't find a vet local..then you have to get it done by a cardiologists.

Most vets..do it with a EKG machine. Then your vet sends off the reporty to OFA.

Only costs me 25.00 for the vet bill and 15.00 to send in to OFA.

But..most places will charge you well over 100.00.

Once you have been breeding for a long time..and you have a vet you see regularly..you will get discounts.

IF the repost is good..you will get a certified certificate that saids..Normal on the heart certificate.

Re: OFA Cardiac Exam Question

Okay, thanks! Just trying to figure all this out. Right now I'm trying to contemplate the easiest/cheapest way to go:

A. Find a local vet that can do the cardiac (if there are any) and then travel 2 + hours for CERF....

OR

B. Wait until Oct and travel 2 + hours to a CERF/cardiac clinic with "cheap" prices. (Could get it all done at once)

I just switched vets this past December b/c my former vet was anti-breeder....My new vet is breeder friendly, but a smaller practice...not totally familiar with the hips.....but have done a few before...

I noticed you've been doing Pennhip instead of OFA recently, why did you switch if I may ask?

Re: OFA Cardiac Exam Question

Personally..I was told by the breeder, where I got Nuggett...that they thoughtit was better...that they rated better.
I do like Pinn-hip, because it covers the whole leg...not just the hips.

But..I was told by Dr.Street, Carter and Burgess..that they like OFA better and that AKC reconizes Ofa..and not pinn-hip.

So..I might go back to OFA.

One ting that I find confusing is.////I had 1 female with Fair hips..which is perfectly fine for breeding..Fair is Normal. But tool her in to do pinn-hip..just to see the differance..well she scored a above 90%..which should of meant..she should of got a EXCELLENT-GOOD on her OFA...So the rating is differant...But I also heard of a male..who rated 60% in pinn-hip..which is good...they did OFA on the same dog..and it came back Excellent..so the rating is weird....LOL...Think I'm going back to OFA...i think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only ting is..you have to watch how soon you do either..because if they are yound..you will get a funky reading...and if a female is coming into season..the rating will be lower/off.

Re: OFA Cardiac Exam Question

I've read a lot about the two, and it seems there's a lot of controversy between everyone on pennhip vs. ofa. I think I'm going to stick with OFA, since it's recognized by the AKC and all. My stud is OFA Fair...I was hoping for better. I'm not going to do Rylee's and Daffie's hips until they're 2 (and when they aren't in heat) so it will "count". I'm not really worried about them, since they've came from a background of all normal hips....I've found a close breeder to me (finally!) that has one stud who is OFA excellent...would love to incorporate that into my dogs!
