Orthotics?

An orthopedist I just went and saw recommended that I look into getting orthotics... anyone have a podiatrist that they recommend for this kind of thing?

And have you seen a big difference in your injuries since getting the orthotics?

Re: Orthotics?

I'm not brash enough to argue with an orthpedist, but here are a couple things to watch out for.

First, have a podiatrist take a look first. They are foot specialists, while orthopedists are bone/joint folks.

Second, I've seen better results from standing foot molds than seated or "ideal position" foot molds that are not weight bearing. I've found that the orthotics tend to be too corrective, even problematic at times.

Finally, if you get an orthotic for running, try to get a softer one. Hard plastic is great for dress shoes, but runners need something more forgiving. Sport orthotics are often molded foams, leathers, and more flexible plastics.

Hopefully that helps a bit.

Re: Orthotics?

Research Sole inserts on the web. I have 5 pair of various densities. They are much better than the prescription inserts I received from the podiatrist, and they're less that $50.

Re: Orthotics?

You should check out the thread "Sports podiatrist needed" from July 21st. It was only a week ago or two that someone else had the same question. The tread had alot of response. The person went to Active Performance Chirorpactic and was very happy with their care, and they had already seen a podiatrist and weren't happy with the shots and being told to stop running. They treat a lot of feet and a lot of runners. They cast orthotics also. Give them a try.

On the topic of orthotics - I love mine. Mine are hard and it doesn't bother me. I noticed a big diffrence after I got them. Before I had chronic knee problems back and forth between the two legs. Nothing major but it never got better until I started wearing orthotics.

Re: Orthotics?

My orthotics were uncomfortable and gave me blisters. I got them from a podiatrist. They don't work so I don't wear them. I found it weird that the dr had one of his staff make the mold for the orthotics. The girl that made mine might have messed up something because people tell me great things about their orthotics and mine made my feet worse.

Re: Orthotics?

I had heel and arch pain for almost 3 months and i tried everything to get rid of it...i got custom made orthotics, and within a couple of weeks the pain was pretty much gone. Personally, i think orthotics are great. Great, but expensive. I do have to agree with the others though and say that the softer kinds are probably better. I was treated the hard ones, and it took 2-3 weeks to break them in. Now that i have broken them in they are working wonders for me.

Re: Orthotics?

I would go to someone both for the evaulation and the fitting who understands runners and foot related dysfunctions. I was misdiagnosed and had a terrible experience with orthotics(I didn't need them).

The place to go would be Active Performance Chiropractic. Their you will get a outstanding assesment and I believe they will cast you as well.
