Church Street parking
It appears to me that over recent times the number of cars needing to park on Church Street has grown somewhat....this in effect lengthens the narrowing of the roadway for traffic passing through and results in more speeding as drivers try to hasten their passage along this narrowed stretch. My question is, do we need to consider permit parking on Church Street or do we need speed bumps (or an alternative speed reduction measure) to address the increased danger to all (road users and pedestrians) ? |

Couldn't agree more Dick. Church Street is an ancient street never designed for cars, let alone multi-car families. Be interesting to see if Catton Park adds to an already difficult situation with parking. Might invite our local councillor to comment here...

Gordon, inviting anyone in office at any level is a great idea. We need to get this worstening situation addressed before something really nasty occurs. I really cant believe that speed bumps, flashing signes or permit parking are prohibitively expensive, so why is no action taken. I've looked at and used other roads where some investment has been made to achieve similar objectives yet in my view are less justified. I would dearly love someone to explain to me how such decisions are made. Maybe someone who seeks my vote at the appropriate time might like to show some real interest in this issue. I'm waiting...! |

Dick, Thank you for your enquiry. I agree that the traffic situation on Church is very difficult. Speed bumps are not welcome by all and cause noise, I receive complaints from residents where these have been installed outside their houses. Permit parking will not stop cars being parked but will add another charge to the residents without a garage or parking space. Interactive flashing signs have been erected in other parts of the village but are they are not as effective as I would like? Church Street has a 20mph speed limit but it is difficult to monitor at all times. I will ask the traffic experts at in the Planning and Transport Department at County Hall to have a special look at Church St. I will also ask the police to get the new community officers to pay more visits to the area. Cllr. Stuart Dunn P.S. It is impossible to please all the people all of the time. Take the situation that most people would like a bus in their street, but no one wants one outside their house. |

Stuart, thank you for showing some interest in this issue and for the actions you propose. One thing is clear, and that is that Church Street is a classic 'rat-run', as such I feel that it is a more deserving case for attention and additional expenditure than say St Faiths Road which has effective speed bumps and a flashing speed warning sign yet does not have the 'rat-run' usage and on road parking not to mention entrance to village hall and a school and two blind bends...! Surely there is a case for similar measures to be put in place on Church Street as exists on St Faiths Road. |

I would like to re-state my thanks to Stuart Dunn for his involvement in this matter which in my opinion merits close attention/action. I would like to know however what is the time-frame for further investigations here? Can we say a report will be with the parish council by the end of September ???? Delays just increase the possibilty of something nasty happening. I'd like to think that some urgency will be applied to this matter now that it has been acknowledged that there is a problem. |

You will find that speed bumps will cause many complaints from people living near them, they cause noise and are unpopular, we have had many requests to remove installed ones because of this. I had a meeting with the traffic engineer from Norfolk County Council on Wednesday 21 May and we visited Church Street and he saw the problems there first hand. I asked him to come up with a solution to this long standing problem and he will respond shortly. I did requested a 20mph repeater sign to be placed on the lamppost at the St.Faiths Road end of Church Street just before the bend, this was agreed to. I also brought his attention to the re-timing of the traffic lights at the newly refurbished Ring Road/St.Faiths Road junction which are now causing long tail backs in St.Faiths Road, this will be looked at.
