How do you pronounce UINTA?

Anybody know? I have always wondered about this one.

Re: How do you pronounce UINTA?

I heard locals and others on a TV show pronounce it with three sylables: you-in-ta, as in the Uinta Mountains in Utah. I initially thought it might be Spanish in origin, being in the Southwest, like ween-ta. Maybe it was and has been Americanized like everything else. John

I lived in Salt Lake for 18 yeas, and the prior post is correct: Three syllables, you-IN-tah, accent on syllable number two.

Probably either Ute or Shoshone in origin.

yup, make that 3 votes for it ... drove through the area last year and that's how eveyone said it on the radio

initially, I erroneously thought that it would be pronounced as ... win - tah

but wrongo! though ... 'you - IN - ta' does sound like a "modern Americanized" version
