Hi John
Excellent website and I also liked your interview on the other website, www.airbattle.co.uk. I wonder if you could help me, I'm trying to track down Tom Gleave's surviving family (I think just one daughter), you mention you were a good friend of his, could you tell me what his wife and daughter's first names were? This will help my internet search for contact details. Of course if you have any old contact details even better or simply forward this email to them [my email is jonathan.p.reeve[at]btinternet.com]. I'd like to ask them about rights to his book, I Had a Row With a German. Many thanks

Hi John, I hope that you are well? Sorry to trouble you, but a relative of someone you flew with in 253 Sqn killed in action September 4th, was on the Battle of Britain forum run by Pip. Here is his message. I have written a bit on him there also> Can you help point him in the right direction or provide any memories of him please?

Message was:
Trying to find further details of the service of F/O Alec Trueman, the father of my uncle by marriage.

Any help gratefully received.

Andy Ashworth.

I had researched a bit and this is partof it. I dont know which Bomber Squadron or other service he had prior to joining you.
A very good source of information would be John Greenwood, the last survivor of 253 Sqn who flew in the Battle of Britain and possibly knew him?

http://www.battleofbritain1940.net/greenwood/lestweforget.html

He has a great website, that pulls no punches and is not written in a modern revisionist way, but rather "Tells it like it was" which is refreshing, honest and historically a treasure trove for future historians or enthusiasts, or relatives to look up things.

I have so far just this information:
F/O Alex Albert Gray Trueman a Canadian flew Hurricanes with No 253 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. He had been trained as a Bomber pilot and was transferred due to shortage of pilots. He had been flying Hampdens and then transferred to the much faster Hurricane. He was shot down and killed over Kenley in a Hurricanes I (V6638) on the 4th of September 1940.

In the year 2000, on the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when he was killed, there was an article in the Sackville Tribune which John says is worth a read. (according to John Greenwood in his website shown here), there

Shot down by German aircraft over base (Kenley) and crashed at Tudor Close, Banstead Pilot killed, aircraft written off.

Hurricane flown by Flight Officer Alex Albert Gray Trueman was shot down over Kenley.

There exists part or parts of this Hurricane as recorded here:

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 4th 1940
WEATHER:

Over the southern half of England it was expected to be fine and warm. Skies should be mainly clear with occasional cloud. The Channel areas were expected to remain fine with good visibility. The north of England and most of Scotland was expected to have rain periods with some heavy falls and strong winds could be expected.

My father's sister was Hilary Trueman, the late wife of Alec Trueman, himself the son of F/O Alec Trueman of 253 Sqn. The personal accounts have revealed a family connection to the Battle of Britain that was previously unknown to me.

Dear John,
I've just seen a post you made about 59 OTU.
I wondered if you had any other stories about Newell Orton or even any pictures from your time together in 59 OTU?

I'm Mike Orton, one of Newell's grandsons!

I'll leave my email address and hope that this finds its way to you.

All the best,
Mike
