[ JORDAN RUBAN IS THE AUTHOR OF "THE MAKERS DIET" ]

Issue 88: From Jordan's Desk: Bugs in Food--Beetle Juice, Anyone?
Bugs in food.it's something many people have unknowingly experienced, even though the insects may be listed on the ingredients. They go by their more "clinical" names, of course, but they come from beetles. Yes, beetles.

As if the thought of eating bugs isn't unsettling enough, these buggy additives are placed in our food right under our noses. Typically, people aren't willingly ingesting these bugs, even though they are often listed on the ingredients. They're found under names such as "chochineal extract," "carmine," and even "confectioner's glaze"-names that sound innocent enough.

While the names may sound harmless, the results of ingesting these bugs are not so innocuous. For some, the consequences of eating these bug parts are downright devastating, resulting in allergic reactions ranging from asthma to anaphylactic shock.

Here's a rundown on these critters and where you can find them:

Cochineal extract and carmine are used to dye food, drinks, and cosmetics shades of red, orange, pink and purple and come from the dried bodies of the female chochineal bug-a parasitic insect that lives on cacti. They're often found in fruit drinks, yogurts, ice creams, colorful candies and even sprinkles. They've been known to turn up in pink lemonade, strawberry yogurt, maraschino cherries, ruby red grapefruit juice and a whole lot more.

Confectioner's glaze, food glaze, resinous glaze and pharmaceutical glaze are glamorized names for shellac, the excretion from a certain type of beetle. Some people argue that this excretion's not too different from how we get honey, but shellac is harvested beetles and all. (That doesn't sound too appetizing or leave much to the imagination.)

In all fairness, a corn protein called zein can also be labeled as confectioner's glaze, but that's not often the form found. Unfortunately, the bugs have the market cornered on confectioner's glaze.

Recently, the FDA finalized a rule requiring food companies to list cochineal extract and carmine on the label when they are used in food and cosmetics. This new ruling doesn't take effect until 2011, however. It's some progress, though. For years, the FDA didn't require color additives to be specifically named on food labels and these buggy additions have hidden behind terms like "artificial colors" or "color added."

Unfortunately, this new ruling doesn't require companies to tell you that the ingredients come from a bug. Many people want to avoid these bug-based ingredients, however, for dietary, health, or other reasons. The problem is that people are often being bugged without their knowledge.

Additional official descriptors of products with chochineal extract include the following addendum, which is seemingly meant to downplay the bug content, too: "Commercial products may also contain proteinaceous material derived from the source insect."

Proteinaceous material from the source insect? That's just disgusting.

Who wants to hire an exterminator for their food? Not me.

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

Thank you Kolleen. They make aspartame (artificial sweetener) by feeding methanol to E Coli bacteria, then, the defecation of the bacteria is "aspartame." God bless you, Coulby

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

If you wonder if the PTB are trying to kill us...??!!?? this sure makes a case for it. GAG is right. Thanks Kolleen, I sent this on to my whole email list. My brother is a big label reader and has been trying to convert the whole family to careful label reading - this sells his point.

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

Thanks I think Coulby!!!

This makes a great case for why we're reminded to shop from the outer aisles rather the inner aisles where everything manufactured is. If I need a sweetener, I use honey or real sugar, and butter and not margarine. It just makes you wonder...

Good job Sue, I sent it to my list too. I think everyone would appreciate being made aware that they are sneaking all-bug-body-parts into our foods thru the back door!

Maybe they've taken the idea from the show "Survivor" thinking that if THEY can survive on them, that we all can!

I wonder if these manufacturers eat their own products!

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

Kolleen, when I found out what is being done to our food supply I wonder that we aren't all sick or dead. It is horrendous to say the least. After I saw how they raise the chickens and cows now and slaughter them (with feces and other filth mixing with the meat) I went strict vegetarian for about two months. Now I only buy organic beef and free range chicken at Sprouts. I eat very little meat at all now but when I do it is carefully purchased. Also, you probably read the "Days of Noah is Now" post I put up a few weeks ago about Monsanto hybridizing and corrupting all the seeds and forcing them on the farmers. The world is very close to starving to death or dying from the food they do eat. Not a pretty picture!

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

About 6 years ago I heard a prophecy that we were to pray for our food and water. It was imperative that we pray for ALL.

I wish I could say I remember to EVERY time I eat but I do believe God is ALWAYS faithfull to protect us.

We do not bless our food HE does....

Exodus 23:25 (Amplified Bible)
25You shall serve the Lord your God; He shall bless your bread and water, and I will take sickness from your midst. And the number of your days I will fulfill.

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

"Control" is an ugly thing isn't it Sue!

Thank God, for Jesus and the freedom we have in Him that we will experience for always when He calls us up!

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

That is wonderful TeaRose - truly! And it is true that He will bless our food and water as we pray.

And if I end up on a deserted island and have to eat bugs to survive, that's exactly what I would believe the Lord for.

But I draw the line when these manufacturers without our knowledge and ok, intentionally inject beetles into grocery products. I don't want to pray over that asking God for health, I want to know what the products are so I avoid them. But I do know what you meant, and agree

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

I know what you mean Kolleen. It is so hard for me to grocery shop now. I read every label and if I don't know an ingrediant or if it has corn syrup, fructose, aspartame, partially hydrogenated oils then I don't buy it. I cooked spagetti tonight with a spagetti squach instead of noodles and they were not thrilled but I want us to eat more vegetarian meals so I told them to get use to it. LOL

Re: GAG!!!!! Read Your Labels!!!

You know what is in just about every processed food out there in one form, or another, that has so many adverse effects it boggles the mind? Soy. Everything has soy in it, and people even drink it straight in Soy Milk.

I did a research paper on soy. It is bad stuff. It is a multi-billion dollar business, and it is causing so many different health problems that people are not even aware of.

If you read the labels on food, it is in everything. It makes men impotent because it has phyto-estrogens in it. The makers of Viagra are also one of the largest producers of soy. How's that for creating a market for yourself?

Below is a link that is an awesome article. It is depressing to be sure, but it is very enlightening.

'Soy is making kids 'gay''. It really is a must read. It would explain alot as to why homosexuality has become so prolific. Those naturally occurring estrogens in soy that are fed to developing little bodies of boys have a very definite effect.

I have tried to alleviate all soy from my diet. It is very hard. You really can't eat much in the way of any processed foods. Hmmm...imagine that.

The other thing that soy does is mess with a person's thyroid, and cause weight gain. I used to love Cheez-Its. They were my all time favorite cracker. I quit eating them because they are made with soy. There are a few things that aren't, but not many. Just read the labels. You will be shocked. I think that it is even in gum, and vitamins too.
