Abide with me

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see—
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

I woke this morning with this song going through my head, especially the second verse. When it seems as if everything around you (us) is going the wrong way, remember who it is we can count on.

Re: Abide with me

Don, I so appreciate this posting and the H.S. giving you this song.

I continue to hear the instruction of abiding as well as "walk with Me and be no more". I hear it daily.

Thank you for the encouragement.

Re: Abide with me

Don, thank you for reminding us of this beautiful song. It is truly the song of the hour for us now even though written so long ago. Blessings to you Don.

Re: Abide with me

Don that is an absolutely beautiful old Hymn.
Thanks for reminding me of it.

I can especially imagine people singing that throughout all the wars.

Yes I agree this is a good time to hear that again.

Re: Abide with me

This hymn was written way back in the early 1800's and it is still so current for Christians everywhere. I love it. Listening to it I feel the presence of angels in the room. Wonderful, and majestic and comforting.

Re: Abide with me

Don's got me on a roll here searching out old hymns.

here is one from the 1700's. I heard it played in the movie Mrs Miniver (1942). They played it in a church service during the war in England (Great Movie)

The words fit so well today as well.

O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home:

Under the shadow of thy throne,
thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting thou art God,
to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in thy sight
are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
bears all its sons away;
they fly, forgotten, as a dream
dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
be thou our guide while troubles last,
and our eternal home!

Re: Abide with me

Sue and 2HH, I've been doing my taxes all day, am worn out after driving them to the all night vigil at the Post Office to get them in before midnight, and just now got to to sit down and get back on the site and listened to versions you posted. Thanks for letting me hear them before crashing into bed. What a great way to wake up, and to go to sleep!

Our congregation sings a lot of praise worship type songs, contemporary things like Days of Elijah, which i love, but I really long for some revisiting some of the old hymns and even the occasional Stamps Baxter southern gospel songs we used to sing back in the 60's. Not a steady diet, but we sure are losing some grand hymns from our lexicon simply by non-use. Thanks for letting me hear those again.

And for now, good night. It is well with my soul.

Re: Abide with me

Don after a day of taxes you deserve a blessing!

Thanks so much for starting this thread. I am still working on a Youtube Playlist that just has the old hymns. They are too precious to forget.

Here's a version of Abide with Me I think you'll like.
Cynthia Clawson sings like an angel...

Re: Abide with me

"A MIGHTY FORTRESS" written by Martin Luther around 1529-1531.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Re: Abide with me

EXCELLENT SUE- DIDN'T HAVE THAT ONE! THANKS

JESUS LOVES ME 1860 ANNA B. WARNER

Jesus Loves Me is a Christian hymn written by Anna B. Warner. The lyrics first appeared as a poem in the context of a novel called Say and Seal, written by Susan Warner and published in 1860. The tune was added in 1862 by William Batchelder Bradbury who found the text of "Jesus Loves Me" in a book, in which the words were spoken as a comforting poem to a dying child. Along with his tune, Bradbury added his own chorus "Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus Loves me..." After publication the song became one of the most popular Christian hymns in churches around the world.

Re: Abide with me

"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."

It is most famous as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank.

Re: Abide with me

Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855-1939) was raised in a Christian home. At age 17, he accepted Jesus as his Savior. He graduated university with a degree in art and was employed successfully as a teacher and administrator of high school art. He traveled extensively, visiting the various art galleries throughout Europe.

Van DeVenter also studied and taught music. He mastered 13 different instruments, sang and composed music. He was very involved in the music ministry of his Methodist Episcopal church and eventually found himself torn between his successful teaching career and his desire to be a part of an evangelistic team. This struggle within himself lasted for almost five years.

In 1896, Van DeVenter was conducting the music of a church event. It was during these meetings that he finally surrendered his desires completely to God -- He made the decision to become a full-time evangelist. As he submitted completely to the will of his Lord, a song was born in his heart.

I Surrender All was put to music by Winfield S. Weeden (1847-1908 ), who published this and many other hymns in several volumes. Weeden so loved this song that the words I Surrender All were put on his tombstone.

The words and melody of I Surrender All have appeared in virtually every English hymnal, and are just as readily sung in churches that prefer contemporary music.

I Surrender All

All to Jesus, I surrender;
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him
, In His presence daily live.

Refrain:
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my bless'd Savior,
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender;
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken;
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

Refrain

All to Jesus, I surrender;
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

Refrain

All to Jesus, I surrender;
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power;
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

Refrain

All to Jesus I surrender;
Now I feel the sacred flame.
O the joy of full salvation!

Refrain

“Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.rdquo; (Luke 14:33)

Re: Abide with me

Wow! 2HH this is some great stuff. Try to find the history on Blessed Assurance by Fannie J. Crosby... one of my favorites. I want it sung at my funeral if I , oh, wait, I'm not planning on doing that!

Re: Abide with me

This is my favorite hynm of all time Don! If I were having a funeral (and I'm not) this is the first song I would want sung. Written in 1873 by Fanny J. Crosby.

Songwriters: Crosby, Fanny Jane; Knapp, Phoebe Palmer

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

[Refrain:]
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
[Refrain]
