You could write something warm and specific like this:

Hi,

I’m researching my grandfather, Earl K. Stehlin, who served with U.S. Forces Austria in the early/mid-1950s. His records show service connected to USFA/G-2 and intelligence work in Austria, with time around Salzburg and other USFA locations before later assignments in Germany and the U.S.

I’m trying to learn more about the units, daily life, and any personnel who may have served with or around him during that period. If anyone has station lists, photographs, stories, directories, or memories connected to USFA intelligence/security work in Austria, I would be very grateful to hear from you.

Thank you for maintaining this history and for any leads you may be willing to share.

Jamie Stehlin

A slightly more casual version:

Hi,

I’m researching my grandfather, Earl K. Stehlin, who served with U.S. Forces Austria in the early/mid-1950s. His military records point to intelligence/security-related work with USFA, including connections to G-2 and service in Austria before later Army intelligence assignments.

I’d love to connect with anyone who remembers him, served in USFA during that time, or has photos, directories, station lists, or stories from the Austria period. I’m especially interested in Salzburg, Vienna, Linz, and any USFA intelligence/security offices or detachments.

Thank you for preserving this history. Any leads would mean a lot.

Jamie Stehlin

Searching for CPT Stephen (Steve) Johnson – 9th Engineer Battalion, Aschaffenburg (1987)

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a former officer of the 9th Engineer Battalion (7th Engineer Brigade) who was stationed in Aschaffenburg (Jäger Kaserne) around 1987.
His name is Stephen (Steve) Johnson and he held the rank of Captain (CPT) at that time.
He is fondly remembered in the local community of Mönchberg (near Miltenberg/Aschaffenburg) for his leadership during a \"Civic Action Project\" in 1987. Under his direction, the U.S. Engineers helped the local riding club (Reit- und Fahrverein Mönchberg) build their riding arena (Reithalle). This project is still a great symbol of German-American friendship in the village today.
We are trying to reconnect or find out where he is today to share some memories (and possibly photos) from that time.
If anyone served with him, knows which company he commanded (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, or HHC), or has any information on his whereabouts, please comment or send me a private message.
Thank you for your service and your help!
Best regards,
Christian
